hell yes. and when i get done with today…i cook again. a lot.
I think more people would vote if there were cookies at the polling places. A sad commentary, but I bet true. Perhaps I should work on that for 2012 . . .
kristin, i here that there are in swing states. i have a co-worker whose sister lives in ohio, and they had snacks and live music and balloons for the kiddies – the whole nine yards.
I actually maintained my Colorado residency, despite having moved to TX like, 6 months ago, just so that my absentee vote would count and I wouldn’t be associated with a state that sucks as much chode as the Lone Star State (motto:We love bush! And not the good kind!).
I made shepherd’s pie and obsessed over the election all day; between the internet and cable TV I was a mess.
Ground beef, pork, and veal
White Potatoes
Carrots, Onions, Celery (holy trinity)
Haricots Verts (dats “green beans” where I come from)
(plus any other veggies you have laying around, particularly peppers or peas)
Chop the onions, celery, and green beans and saute them. Boil the carrots and the potatoes and brown the meat. Season.
Mash the potatoes, mix everything else together.
Flashback: brown 4-8 tbls butter and pour into the bottom of an iron skillet. Sprinkle grated cheese over this as a thin coating, and freeze it to get hard.
Take skillet out at the end and spread a verrrrry thin layer of potatoes across the bottom. then add the meat/veggies mix. Then cover with a nice thick coating of mashed potatoes and sprinkle with more cheese. Bake in a 400-450 degree oven for 15-45 minutes, making sure it doesn’t get too brown on top.
We dropped this in the oven at 6 pm, and were eating like starving hyenas before 7 pm, while drinking
Chatham Artillery Punch:
6 bottles Catawba wine plus a similar volume of very strong brewed Tea.
1-fifth Rye, 1-fifth Rum, 1-fifth Gin, 1-fifth Brandy
1-pint Benedictine
Juice of 18 oranges
Juice of 18 lemons (we let the fruit sit in the cooler as well)
Mix all of the above ingredients and let sit a few days to let the flavors develop. Keeps for months if refrigerated, but filter out the fruit rinds/pulp. Mix in a large brandy snifter with 1/2 mix, 1/2 cheap bubbly, and cheeries, and enjoy.
We got smashed and watched the results and finished with chocolate cake and chocolate hazelnut ice cream while cheering states that declared for Obama and booing loudly for the Commie-Red states.
We live in the currently lavender state of NC, and “grrr-ed” all night long that we apparently couldn’t just declare ourselves and add something meaningful. When we *finally* went to bed, there was still this ugly yellow blob on the map on the east coast, but this morning we apparently have gone for Obama with something less than 12,000 votes.
