Cheap Ass Monday: I have squash out the yin-yang. grains, veg/vegan | (13)
And I don't mean in the gross way, like with the carrot; I've learned my lesson there.* No, the final delivery of the 2008 CSA is the root-vegetables-to-last-you-through-the-coming-nuclear-winter delivery. Thank god we split our share with friends, because we ended up with 20 or 30 pounds of potatoes and 2 dozen squash - and this was after a harsh freeze that killed off a goodly part of Farmer John's crops. *You'd think I'd stop beating the dead carrot already, but I just can't. It's TOO GOOD. Keep going... Related posts:Tight Ass Tuesday: Rip Torn…with Peanuts The soft tinkle of rain ...

Cheap Ass Monday: Brown Paper Packages Tied Up With String cheap ass, grains | (8)
If you're here looking for a sub-$5 meal idea, I have to be up front with you and say that I actually have no idea how much this dinner costs. Maybe you can do it for $5, maybe it costs $100, I don't know. I just know that for me, it was cheap as free because it was made entirely of random food items that were sitting around and for which I had no plans. Food items that, I might add, comprise some of my all-time favorite edibles: farro, winter squash, onions, cheese and hazelnuts. A warm, comforting, filling ...

Cheap Ass Monday: My Little Buttercup Has the Sweetest Smile cheap ass, pasta | (23)
When you think about it, there's nothing really inventive or groundbreaking about basing a cheap meal around pasta.  I mean, that's kinda the point of it, right?  Somehow, though, making the pasta yourself tarts it up enough so that you don't feel like a total toolbox saying, "Hey, internet, did it ever occur to you that PASTA is an easy and economical meal? I know! Go figure!" Keep going... Related posts:You should eat a little something. You look skinny. The Dodge & Graham Horse and Pony Jamboree: Epilogue chicken, grilling, veg | (12)
Thank god, someone made actual dinner. The Horse and Pony Jamboree was a hell of a lot of fun to watch, but, as you may have gleaned, there was not a lot of finished food produced. It fell to the old guard to produce actual, nourishing food that would keep us sated for more than 15 minutes.  You see, the whole day had been hyped as a showdown of new vs. old school: new school being anyone born in 1977 or after who first learned to cook in the current decade (everyone but my brother-in-law Peter), old school being anyone who learned ...
