Cheap Ass Monday: Dear Lord, it BURNS cheap ass, chicken, condiments, grilling, leftovers, veg | (28)
It's not that I don't like spicy foods, it's just my heat threshold is low. Very low. Kind of like an infant, or maybe a puppy. Brian, on the other hand, has been known to eat actual fire for shits and giggles; his favorite hot sauce is called "Sweet Death" and every bottle comes with a skull keychain. (Clearly, I'm not in their marketing demographic.) Continue Reading...

Thursday Night Smackdown: A bit of okay, gov’nor. condiments, grilling, lamb, smackdown, veg | (22)
Quoth Brian's mom, as we finished dinner: "This goes on my list of OK." Which I promise is not the damnation via faint praise it sounds like. Since I crapped out on my own foodie event by failing to smack anything down while in North Carolina last week, I thought we'd make up for it this week (and capitalize on the lovely weather we're having right now) by turning to the grill. We have a copy of Bobby Flay's Boy Meets Grill, acquired Soup Bible-style from a Barnes and Noble discount endcap. Mock Bobby Flay all you want - lord ...

September 2008 First Thursday: The Grill BBQ, beef, first thursdays, fish, grilling, pork, roundups, sauces, sweets, veg, veg/vegan | (6)
September 2008 was all about gorgeous grilled foods and over-achievers. I don't know if the multiple-recipe entrants are trying to make up for lost time or just want to make the rest of you look bad, but some people are definitely working overtime here. Roundup after the jump, and October 2008 info at the end! Continue Reading...

The Dodge & Graham Horse and Pony Jamboree: Epilogue chicken, grilling, veg | (12)
Thank god, someone made actual dinner. The Horse and Pony Jamboree was a hell of a lot of fun to watch, but, as you may have gleaned, there was not a lot of finished food produced. It fell to the old guard to produce actual, nourishing food that would keep us sated for more than 15 minutes.  You see, the whole day had been hyped as a showdown of new vs. old school: new school being anyone born in 1977 or after who first learned to cook in the current decade (everyone but my brother-in-law Peter), old school being anyone who learned ...

The Dodge & Graham Horse and Pony Jamboree: Part 2 BBQ, fish, grilling, pork | (15)
Here's a man who really knows how to massage his meat. A barbecue in North Carolina isn't really a barbecue unless some part of a pig is being cooked, and the Horse and Pony Jamboree did not disappoint.  Dodge (actual first name), the better other half of the HPJ, created an intensely flavorful pork shoulder, jazzing up a traditional Carolina vinegar-based marinade and mop with fresh and dried anaheim and poblano chiles.  He'd also planned some spicy pan-fried black bean cakes and some kind of amuse bouche that involved lemongrass-flavored shrimp wrapped in dough and fried.  I was skeptical, but as ...

The Dodge & Graham Horse and Pony Jamboree: Part 1 BBQ, beer, fish, grilling | (15)
I need something wide and shallow. Here's the exciting thing about this post: you'll get to feel like you're PART OF THE ACTION.  No, I haven't invented smell-o-blogging or taste-o-blogging, but after spending almost 10 hours with Graham and Dodge, 2 chefs from the chi-chi Sanderling resort here on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, I think I can help you re-create the experience I had chronicling them. Here's how you do it: Buy a case of Miller Lite.  Drink half of it, to get a good slosh on.  After every photo caption in this post, yell drunkenly, "LIKE YOUR MOTHER!" and ...

August 2008 Roundup: Finish your veg, or no beer for you. first thursdays, grains, grilling, roundups, veg, veg/vegan | (16)
Have I mentioned to y'all lately that you're awesome? Because you seriously are. Modern pharmacology and I are gradually clawing our way toward stability, and most of you correctly surmised that I'd be skipping my own First Thursday for August. Which I did, because it was getting hard to adjust seasoning correctly what with all the tears in the pot fucking up the salt levels. But some of you didn't skip it, because you are supportive and wonderful and possibly also slightly crazy yourselves, and I couldn't deprive you of the joys of roundupedness. Here are your seasonal, colorful ...
