I went and got the ingredients for the gratin and made that Monday to go with my “harvest chicken”. I have plenty of leftovers, so now I’m going to make the soup. It looks divine.

We would NEVER have leftover gratin (11 year old who has a hollow leg), but if we did this would be the solution. Damn, mango chutney with cheddar? Fancy schmancy.

I’m gratinating anything that moves at the moment. And plenty else that doesn’t. Can’t get enough. Fave gratin cheese – truffle pecorino.

Mmmmmmmm. There’s just something about gratins and then there’s just something about potato soups. Ah, but our cold snap is over. While you Yanks are still freezing ur asses off, it will be back to 85……which I am not totally happy with. -michelle

The gratin, and the ensuing soup, are on my menu plan for the weekend. I’ve been on a soup kick anyway. And just to kick up the starch quotient, I have leftover sauteed fresh corn that I’m going to repurpose into arepas, which may possibly be the finest use ever of leftover corn, if there is ever any leftover corn.

All the farmers I’ve ever met are eternally pessimistic. I think they take the approach that if they expect the worst, they might be surprised by something better. And really, with Mother Nature being the cruel bitch she is, that’s probably the best way to cope with her mood swings.

And in Farmer Ted’s defense, this was a REALLY bad year for growing vegetables.

I actually spent the weekend reheating the gratin I made. Apparently it just gets more congealed, and more unappetizing-looking the more one keeps chucking it back it the oven. I still ate it, though, because it ruled.

But if I make it again, I’m doing this soup. It seems like the much better way to go.
